This book has been produced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the
European Group (EG) for the Study of Deviance and Social Control. I
have participated in 20 of the its conferences in many interesting places
in Europe, often in conflict zones due to the group’s tradition of solidarity
and activism. I have always found the conference an inspiring
and welcoming forum which has contributed greatly in shaping me as a
criminologist.
I carry with me warm and sometimes funny memories from these
events, from people who have become my friends, and from some who
are no longer with us, such as Louk Hulsman, who would always greet
us all with his warm smile and special laughter, and from Stan Cohen,
to whom this book is a tribute, and whom I first met at my very first EG
conference, in Prague in 1993.
My hope is that green criminology will have its place in the conferences
to come, and that the group will continue to contribute to
expanding the field.
I dedicate this volume to Vilde and to the children and future children
of the contributors to this book, in the hope that during their lifetime
this world will be a better place, for all.
