Kirsch’s Selected Writings. He is one of the core creators of the Jungian world as
we find it today. His knowledge of the history, the issues, and the personalities is
second to none. We Jungians know that Tom is kind, empathetic, related – and
responsible for a raft of interesting publications never before gathered into one
book. Maybe we overlooked how penetrating and controversial an observer of
professional political process he is. At points in the book, he can be said to have
taken no prisoners.
I entered the Jungian world in 1974, and I first met Tom at the Rome Congress
of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) in 1977. I asked
him a question about his presentation and the consequent friendship stuck so that
we easily talked about ourselves as “older brother” and “younger brother.” Later, I
served under him on the Executive Committee of the IAAP and was often employed
as an emissary or even as a sort of fixer. He was a remarkable president who foresaw
the global possibilities for analytical psychology.
