Many people have helped me write this book, but I would like to particularly
thank Ann Horne and Monica Lanyado, the editors of the series.
Without their support and encouragement, this book would not have been
completed. They have been patient, knowledgeable and always open to new
ideas. I have also valued the feedback from those who have read my book,
chapter by chapter, particularly Harry, my husband, my brother David Bean
and my colleague, Caroline Freud Penney. Also my thanks to my creative
writing teacher, Ruth Brandt, whose classes taught me to aim to bring every
sentence alive. I have been very fortunate in working with such good
colleagues over the years, as a social worker, a child psychotherapist on the
Family Service at the Cassel Hospital, West London, at the Lantern Family
Service, and on the Independent Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic
Psychotherapy training at the British Psychotherapy Foundation. In each
setting, I have learnt such different skills and perspectives and I wanted to
give a flavour of this diversity in the final chapter where I explore therapeutic
work in different settings. The contributions from the child psychotherapists
there give this book a broader view than I could have achieved alone.
The many children and families I have treated and those I have supervised
and taught in the UK and overseas have all contributed to the ideas
discussed here and stimulated me to keep looking for ways to improve my
skills. Finally, thanks to my husband Harry, who did the cooking and kept
the home going for many months while I was writing this book, as well as
encouraging me every step of the way.
