The European Yearbook of International Economic Law (EYIEL) celebrates its
tenth anniversary in challenging times. COVID-19 and the political, economic and
social consequences of the pandemic have significant effects on everyone—editing a
yearbook is no difference. However, when the editors discussed the focus of Volume
11 of the EYIEL in the summer of 2019, no one could have anticipated what the
following months would bring: Lockdowns, home schooling, work from home,
digital teaching, online conferences and meetings—not to mention personal challenges
in private and family lives. All this has affected not only the editors and the
publisher, but more importantly also our authors. As a consequence, this Volume—
which is the 2020 Volume—only appears in the spring of 2021. We take some
comfort in the fact that many chapters of this Volume benefitted from the “online
first” option which allows the publication of the electronic version of a chapter on
Springer’s website as soon as the chapter is finalised. Nevertheless, a yearbook
should be more than the sum of its online chapters. We are, therefore, happy to
present the Volume 11 of the EYIEL as a book, and a carefully curated one: a
comprehensive collection of different chapters speaking to various aspects of a
general theme.
