Forensic professionals are strongly advised to follow federal/state and professional advisories and recommendations considering the elevated risk posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as preparing for possible resurgences and outbreaks by variants and other
pathogens. For evaluations in the examiner’s office, certain minimum standards may apply
such as the need for pre-visit health assessments by telephone, temperature checks prior to
being seen, ensuring physical distancing, wearing masks, use of hand sanitizers, regular
cleaning of surface in the examination area, sharing disease-related information with the
assessee as part of the forensic orientation, and controlling for interference such as from
significant others or security personnel accompanying the person to be evaluated. Evolving
standards may include the requirement to add barriers such as plexiglass between staff and
interviewees and audio/video taping of procedures. For the necessary health and safety of
all involved, telehealth technologies have begun to have some application in forensic work
but involve a whole new set of procedures and ethical considerations.
