This book began its life as a Ph.D. thesis in the School of Politics and
International Relations, Queen Mary University of London, where I was
supervised by Prof. Rainbow Murray and Dr. Judith Bara. Both were

Dr. Madeleine Davis and Dr. Peter Allen, who all read and commented
on my thesis at various points in its genesis, and whose support and kind
words were greatly appreciated. I am indebted to Dr. Melanie Hoewer
and the Institute of British-Irish Studies at University College Dublin
for providing a welcoming intellectual home in late 2015. My thesis
was examined by Profs. Fiona Mackay and Eric Kaufman, and I am very
thankful for their support as I concluded my Ph.D.
